Hot coins during cold front!

After a cold front came thru yesterday bringing our temp from 60 to 30 and a wind chill in teens, I decided to go to a friends house that had an old farmstead from early 1800's across the st. We found alot of farm pieces from tractors and plows, hinges and a silver piece of something the size of a spoon minus handle that has G.W.Skinner...Clayton,NY stamped on it! Also found some cool old coins including an 1853 half-dime, an 1859 indian head penny, a 1911 V-nickel, a 1940-s wheatie, a 1950-d wheatie, a 1960 and 1964 penny and a 1983 quarter. Only 40 cents, but I looked up wholesale value and it is apprx. $25. I am really getting into old sites that don't produce much but the value is way more rewarding. This makes 9 coins before 1900 that I have got this year already. Today.40 YTD $12.14 HH~ANDY~

!st ring this year

Went down to my fox river site again today and finished it up. 3 hours of struggling thru nasty stuff produced an 1865 two-cent piece. (First 1 I have ever found) shows a value of $10-15 wholesale so I was happy. About 20 feet from the coin along the river I got a 82 Vdi which indicated dime-quarter and I dug 6" and found my first ring of the year....silver with what looks like about 12 diamonds and very old. A couple old shotgun shells and 8 newer pennies rounded out my day as I got out of the thick stuff and into worn areas from fishermen that had obviously been hit hard. Now to find another site, they are hard to find. Today .10 YTD $11.74 + 1 ring HH~ANDY~

Glad I rechecked 1 more time!

Went back to old pumping station today to make 1 final sweep since area is so small, 1 hour and I got 1 faint beep along building showing dime/quarter. This tickled me and I dug 6-7 inches and found an 1893 barber dime which I scratched up a bit. Rescanned hole and it still said quarter and I pulled out some more dirt and wow an 1893-s barber quarter. I ended up finding 3 barber dimes and a barber quarter from this location over 3 attempts but I believe I now have finished this site. Went over to park and got 92 cents in clad for a total of $1.27. YTD: $11.64 HH!ANDY~

First 3 cent piece

Tried the river bottoms again today for 2 hours and man it is rough going. Saw a few snakes and only had 3 hits, but 2 were coins. I found a 1927 mercury dime and another dime size coin I did not recognize til I got home...1870 3 cent nickel and it is in pretty good shape. Hard work getting at these old coins, but it is so quiet and peaceful so I will keep trying! Went up into park area and found 3 quarters, 4 dimes, and 2 nickels in an hour.....more action but boring compared to old stuff. Today's total...$1.38.......YTD...$10.37 HH~ANDY~

No real excitement today except for the fact that it hit 60 here and we have a couple more days til the weatherman says.....snow again so off I went! Went to park today for 2 hours and found $2.97 (9 quarters, 6 dimes, 2 nickels, and 2 pennies) year to date $8.99......I have been ignoring pennies unless they show 3" or deeper to increase my totals and save my legs. I have a friend with an old house with 2 old barns from early 1800's and hope to nail this soon! HH~ANDY~

2nd time out today

Spent a couple hours in some lowland below a park along the river today with only 1 coin found but it was one of the oldest I have ever found...1852 liberty seated dime in bad shape but cleaned it up with warm water and date is visible! Says in good condition worth $12. Also found a couple old shotgun shells and an old key, then went up to park for an hour and found 8 Quarters, 6 dimes, 1 nickel, and 5 pennies...all newer clad! Total found today $2.8o Year to date $6.o2

Finally springlike

Well, I finally got out on Friday, March 12 to detect! First time since Nov. 5, 2009! Weather has been in 50's for a week now and just large snowpiles remain. Went out in yard and tested soil.....yup lets go dig! First place that came to mind is where I got booted out in Nov. I had found a 1902-s barber dime there and had another hit when I got kicked out! Weighed heavy on my mind for 4 months, and I said what the heck! Was there 10 minutes and found the spot and started digging and sure enough I found that other dime....1898 barber....Yay! Nice start to year, but I was not done. Small area but I checked for 15 more minutes and got another hit at 7" showing possible nickel? Yup it was a nickel alright...1882 shield in good condition....OMG this is the best start I have had in 25 years! I left after finishing this site and went to a park on other side of town that was built in 60's and it was nice. One and a half hours produced a half dollar, 8 quarters, 4 dimes, 2 nickels, and 7 pennies. All were recent except a 1955-d penny. Not a bad start tho for 2 hours.......$3.22 year to date. I want to get out again as soon as my aching thighs heal, Dang I need to have a winter excersize program for this old frame! HH~ANDY~
